Both the roots and the green tops are eaten .The 3-1/2" x 2-1/2" egg-shaped roots grow partly above ground. The flesh of the root is white, fine-grained and is mild flavored. Turnip s are hardy cool-season plants but are not as frost resistant as rutabagas. Turnip seeds sprout easily in hot weather so they can be started in late summer .
