{"id":88,"date":"2022-04-06T16:41:32","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T16:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrew2\/?page_id=88"},"modified":"2022-04-09T14:49:19","modified_gmt":"2022-04-09T14:49:19","slug":"want-to-brew-your-own-beer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrewracine\/home\/want-to-brew-your-own-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"Want to Brew your own Beer???"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-350\" src=\"https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrewracine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beer-colors-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrewracine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beer-colors-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrewracine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beer-colors-768x908.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dpwigley.com\/bellecitybrewracine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Beer-colors.jpg 812w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Complete Brewing Process<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Brewing consists of five simple stages.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Brewing the Beer \u2013 <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In extract &amp; partial grain brewing, the extract and hops are boiled together with water for about an hour to sterilize the extract and release the bittering qualities of the hops.\u00a0 If grains are used, they are steeped like a tea bag prior to the boil to add additional color and flavor complexity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Cooling and Fermenting &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The hot mixture (called wort, rhymes with flirt) is cooled to room temperature and siphoned or transferred to a fermenter (usually a plastic food grade bucket), where it is topped off with additional water to achieve the desired batch size.\u00a0 Cleanliness and sterilization are very important since the wort can be easily infected by bacteria while in this state.\u00a0 Once the mixture drops to room temperature, usually by means of an ice bath, yeast is added to start the fermentation process.\u00a0 The wort is then covered and an airlock is used to keep the wort sealed during ensuing fermentation.\u00a0 Your beer will ferment for 4 days to 2 weeks, and usually will be transferred to the glass carboy during this time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Priming and Bottling &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Once the beer is fully fermented, it is usually siphoned to a bottling bucket to prepare for bottling.\u00a0 At this stage, priming sugars such as corn sugar, dry malt extract, or candi sugar are mixed with the beer, after which it is siphoned into bottles and capped with a bottle capper. While most kits include a hand capper, a bench capper greatly speeds up this process.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Aging &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Once the beer has been bottled, it needs to age for 2-6 weeks.\u00a0 While aging, the yeast will ferment the priming sugar, and create carbon dioxide.\u00a0 This carbon dioxide will naturally carbonate your beer. Sediments such as excess yeast and proteins will settle during aging. Usually drinkable after a month, some beers may take several months to reach peak flavor. Special beers could take a year or more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>Drinking &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When the beer is properly aged \u2013 usually in a cooler area like a basement, take a few out and place in refrigerator!\u00a0 Try them out and decide for yourself whether you really need to buy the mass produced market beers ever again!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><b>TIME TO BREW!<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The outline above and your local home brew shop will get you started. Extract and partial grain kits should contain full information to get your first batch completed. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003572;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We recommend you patronize your local liquor store or tavern and sample a \u201cvariety pack\u201d of micro-brewed beers. We find that many beginners may think they like \u201cdark\u201d beers, when what they really like is a hoppy beer, or vice versa. Try some beers you\u2019ve never had before, remember what you liked or disliked about each, and let your brew supply shop know your preferences so that they may select a kit or recipe you are sure to enjoy. Then check to see if there is a local beer club you may join or visit. They usually offer tastings of selections you will be sure to remember, and may soon be able to imitate.
