Merkur, also known as Hallertauer Merkur, is a high alpha bittering hop that originated from the Hull Hops Research Institute in Germany. This hop was introduced to the brewing world in 2000 and is recognized for its dual-purpose capabilities. While it's primarily known for its bittering potential, Merkur is not just about that. It boasts a rich content of myrcene and humulene oils, which impart an earthy foundation complemented by a citrusy zing. This makes it particularly effective when used in the early to mid-stages of brewing. The hop's lineage can be traced back to Magnum, as Merkur is a direct descendant of this hop variety.

Its genetic makeup is a cross between Magnum and a German experimental variety, 81/8/13. When it comes to its aroma profile, Merkur is quite versatile, offering notes of citrus, herbal elements, sweet aromatic nuances, and tropical hints. This hop is suitable for a range of beer styles, including IPAs, Lagers, Belgian Ales, Pilsners, and Stouts, making it a favorite among many brewers, especially homebrewers.
